Athletics

Over the last few weeks in PE, Tu, Wt and Ds classes have been learning more about athletics before we complete our whole school Athletics Competitive and Social Events.

We have been learning about basic technique and how to do our throws or jumps. In many of our sessions, we have had partners who would tell us what we might need to improve on or what we were doing really well at.

Some technique that we have learnt:

Discus - That if we treat the discus as a clock and put the pointer finger at 12 it will help make sure we have the start to correct hand placement. By also gently having our arm hanging down by our side and swinging it back and forward means we can have the discus in the right place.

This video was a great start to understanding hand placement.

Shot Put - That Shot put is not about throwing the ball, but about PUSHING the ball forwards. It is also important that you use your lower body to give you more power.

High Jump - We need to remember that for High Jump we are aiming to use scissor kick and to land on our feet.

Long Jump - We need to be aware of where we are jumping from. It can also help to step out the track before you jump. It is also really important to land with two feet and try not to go backwards!

I was really impressed with how everyone gave each activity a go and tried to improve their performance. As a teacher, I usually supervise and give feedback to each athlete. I did however have a go with one class in the long jump. Super scary since I haven't jumped in a very long time, but it was very fun having the class cheering for me. :D

What is your favourite track and field (Athletics) event?
